New Faces at DIKU in August and September 2024
Say hello to the new faces at DIKU. We wish you all a warm welcome!
Jacob Kæstel-Hansen - August 1 - ML - Postdoc
On August 1 Jacob Kæstel-Hansen started as a Postdoc in the ML section. Jacob is currently a Novo Nordisk Foundation Postdoctoral fellow working on understanding 3D genome organization by integrating AI, physics, and microscopy. His fellowship is a collaboration between DIKU and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between the laboratories of Prof. Wouter Boomsma (DIKU), Prof. Anders Sejr Hansen (MIT), and Prof. Leonid Mirny (MIT). While his project is a collaboration he will for the first 3 years sit in the USA followed by a year at DIKU and in this time he will build the experimental and computational prerequisites to understand 3D genome organization.
Johanna Maria Düngler - 19 August - ML - PhD Student
On August 19, Johanna joined the ML section as a PhD student. Her research will focus on differential privacy, robustness and fairness in ML. She is especially interested in how those different notions interact with each other. She is fortunate to be supervised by Amartya Sanyal and Rasmus Pagh. She obtained my Masters and Bachelor degree in Mathematics from ETH Zürich. In her free time she likes to play the guitar, and do sports like padel, running or swimming.
Martina Finocchiaro - 19 August - IMAGE - Postdoc
On August 19 Martina Finocchiaro started as a Postdoc in the IMAGE section. Martina completed her Marie Skłodowska-Curie Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain, and in Biorobotics at Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Italy, in 2023. Her research primarily focused on developing a framework for evaluating human-machine interfaces (HMI) in robot-assisted intraluminal procedures. She holds a M.Sc. in Bionics Engineering and a B.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering.
At DIKU, Martina is a postdoctoral researcher on the IRE project, 'Intelligent Robotic Endoscopes for Improved Healthcare Services'. Her work focuses on developing advanced colonoscopy simulators for designing innovative endoscopes, training endoscopists, and creating new strategies for operator assistance. Her research interests include medical robotics and simulation, ingestible and intraluminal robots, and human-machine interfaces.Outside of research, Martina is an avid sports enthusiast who enjoys skiing, surfing, dancing, Muay Thai, running, biking, SUP, aerial hoop, climbing… and many other sports!
Christian Bertram - September 1 - AC - PhD Student

On September 1, Christian Bertram started working at BARC as an integrated PhD student supervised by Mikkel Thorup and co-supervised by Jacob Holm. He recently concluded the first year of my master's in mathematics from UCPH. Recently, he has been working with the top tree data structure under supervision of Jacob Holm. In his free time, Christian loves being outdoors, and has a passion for long distance hiking and bicycle touring.
Amik Raj Behera - September 1 - AC - PhD Student
On September 1, Amik started as a Ph.D. Student under Prof. Srikanth Srinivasan in the Algorithms and Complexity section. He did his undergrad from the Chennai Mathematical Institute and master's from Aarhus University. He is interested in problems with an algebraic or combinatorial flavor. In this PhD project, he will be looking at the efficiency of computing polynomials that are the same under the reordering of variables. In his free time, Amik likes to try street photography, watch movies, and go biking.
Tuukka Korhonen - September 1 - AC - Postdoc

On September 1, Tuukka Korhonen started as a postdoc in the AC section. Tuukka received his PhD last May from the University of Bergen. His PhD focused on parameterized graph algorithms, particularly on algorithms for graph width parameters. Tuukka is originally from Finland and got his MSc from the University of Helsinki, where he worked on the more applied side of algorithmics. At DIKU Tuukka will continue working on graph algorithms, hoping to work on a wide range of topics in the area. A fun fact about Tuukka is that he read the Harry Potter books for the first time this summer.Thomas Terkildsen - September 1 - HCC - PhD Student

On September 1, Thomas Terkildsen started as a PhD Student in the HCC section. Thomas is an experienced XR developer who holds a BSc and a MSc in Psychology. His previous research has been centered around psychophysiological measurement of emotions and virtual presence. At DIKU, Thomas will be exploring how Extended Reality (XR) technology can facilitate and support positive behaviour change.Théo Borem Fabris - September 1 - AC - PhD Student

On September 1, Théo started as a PhD Student in the AC section, focusing on computational complexity with an emphasis on arithmetic circuit complexity. He holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he worked on a few topics in probabilistic combinatorics and average case proof complexity. His interests lie broadly in theoretical computer science and its interactions with combinatorics, probability theory, and algebra. In his free time, he enjoys learning new things, running short distances, and going to the beach. He also has a huge collection of notebooks and knows some basic bookbinding techniques.
Sarah Masud - September 16 - NLP - Postdoc

On September 16, Sarah Masud started as a Postdoc in the NLP section. Sarah broadly works in the area of computational social systems with a focus on news narrative (postdoc) and hate speech modelling (phd). Her Phd at IIIT-Delhi was supported by fellowships from Google and PMRF. Besides her academic services, she actively volunteers for AnitaB.org and the Journal of Open Source Software. A fun fact is that Sarah is an avid reader and a seasonal poet.
Yan Li - September 1 - ML - PhD Student
On September 1, Yan Li began working as a Research Assistant in the Machine Learning section at DIKU. He holds a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics from the University of Copenhagen. At DIKU, his research focuses on representation learning and generative models, with a particular emphasis on applying deep generative models to multimodal datasets for cancer diagnosis and prediction.
Nirupam Gupta - 1 September - ML - Tenure Track Assistant Professor
On September 2 Nirupam Gupta started as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in the ML section. Prior to DIKU, Nirupam held postdoc positions at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland and Georgetown University, Washington DC, USA. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA and his bachelors from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India. At DIKU, he will be working on the fundamental aspects of distributed learning (i.e., learning on decentralized data), including but not limited to robustness (against Byzantine faults), privacy, personalization, acceleration and scalability. His vision is to develop a safe and reliable framework for machine learning solutions in privacy-critical public-domain services like healthcare, finance and media recommendation. He is an amateur musician, painter and tennis player. He also enjoy hiking, cycling, skiing and cooking.
