Qualified hiring freeze at SCIENCE

Faculty of Science
03/06/2025

Based on discussions in the Faculty Collaboration Committee (FSU), the Dean has decided to introduce a qualified hiring freeze across the entire Faculty of Science.

As of 3 June 2025, a qualified hiring freeze will be introduced at SCIENCE. This measure is intended to limit the number of redundancies in connection with the upcoming cutbacks associated with the management of SCIENCE's structural deficit.

A qualified hiring freeze means that management will carefully assess whether vacant positions should be filled or not. The final decision on advertisement, occupation, extension or creation of a post generally moves up one organisational level compared to usual.

The approving manager (one level higher than usual) must assess whether the position involves tasks that are of a business-critical nature and therefore must be filled. This may include responsibilities related to ensuring operational stability or meeting obligations to external partners, typically within activities funded by DR50/60.

Which positions fall under the qualified hiring freeze?

All positions, regardless of the source of funding, are subject to the qualified hiring freeze. This includes both VIP (faculty and scientific positions) and TAP (administrative,  technical and research supportive staff), full-time and part-time positions, fixed-term and permanent positions, extensions of fixed-term positions and newly created positions. It applies to positions with and without job postings, as well as positions currently being filled.

During what period does the qualified hiring freeze apply?

The qualified hiring freeze will take effect on 3 June 2025 and will remain in place until the end of 2025.
